Golf Specific Bulletins from the MSU Turf Team

Winterkill of Turfgrass | 156k
“Winterkill” is a general term that is used to define turf loss during the winter. Winterkill can be caused by a combination of factors including crown hydration, desiccation, low temperatures, ice sheets and snow mold.

Flooding of Turf | 140k
Several factors determine turf survival under water: turfgrass species, submersion duration, submersion depth, water temperature and light intensity.

Grub Management for Golf Courses
In the spring, golf course turf may suffer from the fall feeding damage from two white grubs: the European chafer and the Japanese beetle.

Selected Web Links for Golf Courses:
GDDTracker 2.0
The MSU GDDTracker website has been recording growing degree days since March 1st. There are currently 88 weather stations in our network. The database is updated with yesterday's information every morning. Predicting application timing for Poa annua seedhead control with a calendar is not reliable. Using growing degree days is a much better predictor of physiological plant status.

Michigan Turfgrass Environmental Stewardship Program
The Michigan Turfgrass Environmental Stewardship Program (MTESP) represents a collaborative project between governmental agencies, the turfgrass industry, Michigan State University and environmental advocacy groups.

MSU Turfgrass: Water Page | Irrigation Practices
The non-ag irrigation committee recently completed a document outlining best management practices for non-agricultural irrigation. The BMP document is available for download. Several external irrigation resources are listed. More>>

Turfgrass Weed ID | msuturfweeds.net
This site is intended to help you learn the key identification characteristics of common and not-so-common turfgrass weeds found in Michigan and the midwest. Correct identification is the first step to proper management. This site is filled with over 300 images to help you on your way to becoming a weed id juggernaut.

ADDITIONAL GOLF COURSE RESOURCES:
The following resources from the midwest region have been reviewed by the MSU Turf Team.
